THE 54 THOUSAND PEAKS CHALLENGE

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

Serra de Tramuntana, the main mountain range in Mallorca, crosses the island from NE to SW and covers 63,084 hectares (almost 30% of Mallorca’s total area), has a length of 90 km and a width that varies between 15 and 20 km, and there are exactly 54 peaks with heights above thousand meters. Most of these 54 peaks are concentrated in the central part of Tramuntana. There are barren and rocky.

All 54 Thousand can be hiked without extreme difficulty, except two of them: Puig Major, the highest peak of Serra de Tramuntana, which is officially a military zone and cannot be trespassed, and Agulla des Frare, for which  climbing gear as harnesses and ropes are necessary.

For the toughest mountaineers there is the possibility of chaining the 54 peaks in a route of approximately 143 km and about 10,000 meters of elevation gain.

DAY 3. & day 4.

Although Puig Roig (1,003m) has the lowest altitude among Serra de Tramuntanas’ 54 peaks, it is the closest to Mallorca’s northern coast and offers some of the most incredible and idyllic coast views. The excursion runs through wild and inhospitable terrain where nature is shown in its rough state, so it’s a challenging climb. The excursion crosses the lands of Mossa’s estate, where it begins and ends at Lluc Monastery. A total of 11 miles (17,7 km) and +618m elevation gain.

On the fourth day, we add seven Thousand (Puig de N’Alí – 1,035m; Es Frontó de Comafreda – 1,061m; Puig de Massanella – 1,367m; Puig de Massanells South – 1,352m); Puig de ses Bassetes – 1,216m; Puig Criança d’Alt – 1,004m; Puig d’en Galileu – 1,182m) for 11 miles (17,5km) and +1,371m elevation gain. It is a challenging stage with steep ascents and rocky terrain, but the reward is well worth the effort for the breathtaking views awaiting at the top of each summit. Among these is Puig de Massanella, the second-highest peak on the island and one of the most prominent peaks in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.
